Background: Armas Launis was one of the most successful Finnish opera composers of the early 20th century. However after settling in France in 1930, he was completely forgotten in his homeland. On 17-Mar-2004 his music enjoyed a renaissance when Sakari Oramo conducted the premičre of his opera Aslak Hetta more than 70 years after its completion. The events of Aslak Hetta, composed in the late 1920s, are set in Norwegian Lapland and the Kautokeino uprising of 1852. The story is founded on historical fact: a northern Sámi by the name of Aslak Hetta and his men descend upon the unsuspecting village of Kautokeino in order to wipe the 'godless' off the face of the earth. In the resulting skirmish Aslak Hetta, self-appointed king of the Sámis, meets a sorry end: he is executed. Founded on six authentic Sámi melodies, the tunes consist mostly of five-note motifs: a unique blend of Wagnerian leitmotiv and archaic Sámi folklore. |
