Background: Gramophone Award Winner, Soile Isokoski is one of the most renowned Finnish singers internationally. This CD entitled Suomalainen rukous (Finnish Prayer) consists of sacred solo songs, which can be traced back to those that evolved in the late 17th century for private devotions at home. The sacred solo songs written in the 19th and 20th centuries are more akin to Lieder, whether they be simple chorale-like melodies or richer in musical content. The body of the most frequently performed Finnish sacred solo songs was written in the first half of the 20th century and thus falls stylistically within the realm of Romanticism and its aftermath. |
