Background: Järnefelt's songs are characterised by their use of melody, colourful harmony and a Nordic freshness and lucidity. Järnefelt set many poems in Finnish to music; this was rare at the beginning of the 20th century, since composers at the time favoured Swedish, which was then the language of the cultural élite.
