Background: Anecdotal evidence holds that Segovia asked Villa-Lobos to write him a small Étude, whereupon Villa-Lobos wrote him twelve... Here, apparently, the two gentlemen cordially disagreed. Segovia wrote in a letter to Manuel Ponce that the Villa-Lobos etudes were useless except for a few and that 'the music was dreadful, Villa-Lobos ... vulgar and foolish.' Segovia preferred a more traditional style and never played all the etudes. Leo Brouwer's sets of Estudios sencillos differ considerably in their approach. Brouwer aims at creating a kind of musical stock cube, a distillation of artistically challenging allusions to the history of Western concert music as seen through an Afro-Cuban filter. Brouwer's youthful style clearly shows the influence of Bartók, whom he met amongst other leading European avantgarde composers in Darmstadt and embarked on his 'experimental' period, which lasted into the late 1970s. The music on this disc displays the wide variety of the Latin American spirit and is a monument to fiery human passion! |
