Background: Einar Englund was the most significant symphonic composer in Finnish music since Sibelius and Madetoja. The First Piano Concerto is one of the composer's most popular works and he performed it himself many times. The Second Concerto has heavier orchestration and is more serious in mood. The two concertos are partnered by the overture Epinikia (Hymn of Victory 1947) which Englund, who served in the Second World War, considered a declaration on the joy of surviving. |
