Background: Les Danaides was premiered in Paris on April 26th 1784. The performance was a huge success and Gluck was once again hailed as a musical genius. Then shortly afterwards Gluck confessed in a letter to a Paris newspaper, that the entire opera was composed by Salieri, his assiatant as he was to old and frail to attempt the commission.
