Background: Charlie Parker, also known as 'Bird' or 'Yardbird', was one of the greatest jazz pioneers and probably the foremost jazz alto saxophonist. After playing with various bands in Kansas City, he moved to New York in 1939 to play in the band of Earl Hines. In 1946 he suffered a breakdown but after soon after went on to make some of his best recordings. Despite a heroin addiction, he changed the popular face of jazz by championing 'Be-Bop' music. He was joined in 1947 by the eager Miles Davis, who became part of his band for some time. These recordings are taken from the 1946 and 1947 sessions with Miles Davis on trumpet. |
