Background: Paul Robeson was something of an icon, the black singer par excellence, an artist who earned the respect of lovers of serious music and light music alike. He first came to notice in the British production of Show Boat where his definitive version of Ol' Man River (the lead track on this album) stopped the show. He played the same part in the 1932 Broadway revival and made his first feature 'The Emperor Jones' the following year. He had a glorious voice, well-produced and steady, with rounded vowels, clear pronunciation and an innate musicality. He gained a respect for his race, which during that period was a mighty achievement. |
