Background: This all Simon Holt disc has been produced in collaboration with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Boots of Lead forms the third part of the composer's five-part Emily Dickinson cycle, 'a ribbon of time' as he calls it. The music is a stately, almost claustrophobically slow, frozen dirge, with off-stage clarinet and small ensemble. Other ensemble works on the disc include eco-pavan, scored for a 'ghostly' ensemble including bass flute and heckelphone. Lilith, based on the biblical story of Adam's first wife who was a serpent; and Kites, borne out of the composer's interest in Japanese culture, and portraying, amongst others, the large O-dako kite, which requires up to 40 people to help fly it! Feet of Clay is a challenging piece, with a sense of drama and heroism, written for cellist Ulrich Heinen around the time of the first performance of Boots of Lead. |
