Background: Othello, dating from 1602-1604, is the second in Shakespeare's great sequence of four tragedies, it differs markedly from the others in its essentially domestic milieu - the story unfolds with suffocatingly close intensity, unrelieved by the religious or metaphysical context we expect to find in Shakespearean tragedy.
