Background: World premiere recordings of a pair of lost masterpieces by Saint-Saëns, recently re-discovered. Hélène, a sumptuous one-act poème lyrique written for Dame Nellie Melba in 1904, features two of Australia’s finest singers, Steve Davislim and Rosamund Illing, as the lovers Paris and Helen of Troy, while the former also takes centre stage in the memorable orchestral version of Nuit Persane, a cycle for tenor, alto, chorus and narrator. Both are conducted by young French maestro Guillaume Tourniaire. |
