Background: This live 1953 broadcast from Cologne of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.4 with Joseph Keilberth is a rarity and has not been issued on pirate copies. There are four other recordings - three commercial (studio) recordings dating from 1939 (Böhm), 1951 (Karajan) and 1955 (Galliera) and one other live tape from 1950 (Dorati). The sound from WDR's original master tapes is of high quality. Schumann's Piano Concerto from a concert in Essen in 1951 conducted by Günter Wand is also exceptionally rare. There is a commercial recording from 1940 (Böhm) currently available as well as live performance from 1942 (Furtwängler). The sound is again excellent from the WDR and far superior to the earlier recordings. The Debussy, Ravel and Bach fill-ups have never been issued before and come from the Swedish Radio, 1948. |
