Background: Pietro Torri was born in Italy in 1650 and in 1684 became organist and court Kapellmeister in Bayreuth. In 1689 he was appointed organist by the Elector of Bavaria and remained in his service for the rest of his career. This work should be considered as the first dramatic oratorio ever to be composed in French. The material is drawn from events in the Apocrypha and from the lives of the saints. |
