Background: Composed in 1894, the 'Ballet Suite' may not be one of Glazunovs better known compositions but it shows all the masterly traits of his more famous ballet scores: Raymonda, The Seasons and Lady Soubrette. 'The Characteristic Suite' is based on series of piano variations composed in1880 which the composer orchestrated four years later. Recorded in 1990 this is a hugely enjoyable release and is highly recommended.
