Background: 'Pepito' received its first performance at the Theatres des Varietes in 1853, making this one of the earliest surviving scores (in part) from the pen of the world’s greatest operetta composer. The recording, which dates from 1949, incorporates all the surviving music, with a German language narration between the musical numbers. Due to the historical nature of the recording the sound quality is not what we would expect from a digital recording today but this is a marvelous and rare opportunity to hear this music by the young Offenbach. |
