Background: The industrialist Werner Reinhart was of great importance to the careers of Viennese avantgardists Alban Berg, Anton Webern, and Arnold Schönberg, as all were ostracized at home. This farsighted patron not only built up one of Europe's most important music libraries but his own Musikkollegium Winterthur presented many concerts of new music. Indeed, Webern thanked Reinhart for his kind support by dedicating his Variations to him - Reinhart invested all the financial and diplomatic means at his disposal to enable Webern to escape to Switzerland in 1943.
