Background: César Franck began to compose chamber music quite late in his career but his creative output was huge once he started. Foremost among them is the wonderful Piano Quintet in F major, which is the Spiegel String Qt's latest collaboration with MDG. This is coupled with Chausson's Piano Quartet in A major.

Chausson wrote of the work 'Do not expect a gloomy work,' 'Not at all. It is almost exuberant and very light.' Chausson's comment gives some idea of the transparency and lightness that lovers of chamber music admire in this work. Its elegant melodies and ethereal harmonies clearly point the way forward to Impressionism.
