Background: Mahler's Symphony No.4 is presented here in Erwin Stein's salon music version from 1921. It is in this version that the composition first reveals itself as a genuine turn-of-the-century document, with the morbid atmosphere of the times conveying itself more immediately than in the original. Christiane Oelze is the congenial soprano who guarantees all of this in her performance with the Thomas Christian Ensemble. |
