Background: Christoph Graupner numbers among the most imaginative composers of the period between the late baroque and rococo. His rich powers of invention, finely nuanced treatment of orchestral tone colours and skill in the musical depiction of atmosphere brought him celebrity status during his lifetime. Graupner was born near Zwickau in Poland. Through Telemann he secured a position as a harpsichordist and composer at the Hamburg Opera. He became one of Northern Germany's most highly regarded opera composers. In 1709 he became court music director for The Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt and from then on he composed mainly church pieces, concertos, symphonies, sonatas and harpsichord. After his death, inheritance disputes kept his works under lock and key for many years and thus contributed to their oblivion. The Nova Stravaganza Ensemble, founded by Siegbert Rampe in 1988, specialises in music of the 17th and 18th centuries. |
