Background: Busoni's arrangements of Bach's Goldberg Variations, receive their premiere recordings in this MDG release. For the pianist Busoni, Bach's artistry was the point of departure for modern piano playing. Busoni's Bach arrangements are borne by two characteristics, by enthusiasm and naiveté. In his eyes he was not arranging Bach but guiding him to a sound that in the eighteenth century 'had been left behind the great composer'. Busoni reinforced the bass with magnificent octave doublings, ornamented wherever he could - in other words, he enthusiastically continued the compositional process.

Taught by Alfred Brendel, Claudius Tanksi has received a number major distinctions and international prizes. Several of his MDG recordings have been honoured with the 'German Record Critics Prize'.
