Background: Richard Strauss composed the work for 13 instruments at the end of 1881. This well-written and sweetly sounding work, as Strauss's publisher Eugen Spitzweg described it, marked the beginning of his music for wind instruments. The Ensemble Villa Musica, a group of former orchestra leaders and first soloists from the Berlin Philharmonic and the Symphony Orchestra of Bavarian Radio, has already made a name for itself with its impressive performances. heir rounded timbre and very distinctive articulation make this recording a delight to listen to. |

- Penguin Guide 3 star 'these civilized and genial pieces are a joy and splendidly played here by the Villa Musica Ensemble. One marvels afresh at the inventiveness, skill and culture of Strauss's writing for wind instruments' |
