Background: Johann Nepomuk Hummel's rarely recorded opus 5 sonatas include two for fortepiano and violin and one for fortepiano and viola. On this CD they are performed by two highly regarded Canadian based early music specialists, the keyboard player Paul Luchkow and the violin and viola player Michael Jarvis.
Since 1958 when his E major trumpet concerto was rediscovered, there has been a serious re-appreciation of the music of Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Mozart's only full-time student. The op.5 Sonatas, from around 1798 when Hummel was about twenty years of age, feature youthful freshness, genial humour and melodic inventiveness. Hummel represents the supreme culmination of the late classical style. The current re-appraisal of his music places him as the 'missing link' – the logical connection between Mozart, Haydn and Schubert through Chopin to Mendelssohn and Schumann. |
