Background: Goya's Six Unpleasant Pieces for 10 Soloists was written in 1944 when the composer was imprisoned by the Franco regime in Barcelona. The terrible experiences of the period were to leave a permanent mark on Lamote who was never to forget the darkness of prison. Goya was a natural product of this environment a work which creates aesthetic beauty from a starting point of dark pessimistic reality.
