Conductor:
Martyn Brabbins

Background: Paul Gilson acquired his knowledge mainly through the study of scores - the Russian school and Wagner's operas made a lasting impression upon him. La Mer is a musical fantasy in an early Romantic style with the unusual addition of a large saxhorn group and a male voice choir.

The Andante and Scherzo are based on the classical principle of contrast between dreamy lyrical themes and more rhythmically powerful ones and the repetition of these themes. La Captive stands out with its melodic ‘couleur locale’ and harmonic diversity, its rhythmic complexity derived from oriental songs and dances and its richly poetic, colourful and dramatic orchestration.
