Background: Elliott Carter has established himself as one of the most influential figures in American new music. His distinctive style became apparent during the late 1940s and was sealed with the 1st String Quartet of 1951, displaying a complex rhythmic style with sharply atonal writing and a feeling of constant motion and change. The Second String Quartet was written in 1959 has four distinctly independent instrumental parts, each with its own 'persona' whereas the Third String Quartet, composed in 1971, is made up of two contrasting duos. The Fourth String Quartet was written much later in 1986 at a time where Carter was composing prolifically. |
