Background: Charpentier visited Rome in the mid 1660's, here he discovered the music of Carissimi. On his return to Paris, he settled at the Hotel de Guise, owned by Marie of Lorraine. Not long after his arrival, the de Guise family was struck by several deaths and Charpentier in turn composed several funeral works. These splendid pieces were clearly influenced by his time in Italy. |
