Background: Schütz was the greatest German composer of the 17th century and the first of international stature. His output was almost exclusively sacred and set to German texts, following Martin Luther's Protestant endeavours to establish the vernacular as a literary and liturgical language. The Symphoniae Sacrae of 1650 are psalms in praise of the Father. His Kleine geistliche Konzerte, are monuments of austerity invoking the Son. |
