Background: This recording project sprang from a concert in Versailles, where the Centre de Musique Baroque invited Doulce Memoire to give a programme of airs de cour by Pierre Guédron, Surintendant de la Musique de la Chambre under Henri IV. In exploring this composer's work, Denis Raisin-Dadre was struck by the popular, dance-like character of some of the airs from his 1608 collection, and also by the melodic resemblance to dances from the collection by Praetorius, Terpsichore. This led to the idea of reconstructing a court ball by interspersing dances from Terpsichore with, frequently bawdy, airs by Guedron. |
