Background: Commissioned by Melvyn Bragg and the South Bank Show, 'Toward the Unknown Region' is Tony Palmer's portrait of the late Sir Malcolm Arnold. Filmed with his friends and family in Norfolk, London, Cornwall and Ireland the film includes extracts from many of Arnold's works. While paying homage to the immensity of Arnold’s creative achievement this gripping and absorbing film does not shirk the darker side of Arnold’s life - his frequent breakdowns, massive insulin treatment, electric shock therapy, alcoholism and suicide attempts. 'This complex, sad and subtle profile looks set, quite rightly, to win every award going' The Times 'Palmer at the top of his form and Malcolm Arnold magnificently portrayed' Melvyn Bragg. |
