Background: Hanggai are at the forefront of a musical movement in China that is finding inspiration in native folk traditions. The musicians draw on a repertoire of traditional songs from the Inner Mongolian grasslands that have all but disappeared during China's recent turbulent past. At their musical core are the two most important instruments of the grasslands - the iconic morin khuur, the horse-hair fiddle and the tobshuur, a strummed two-stringed lute. Many of the songs use a throat-singing technique (hoomei) that has been handed down over the course of more than two millennia. |
