Background: Like many instruments, the Viola was hardly popular with 19th Century composers, apart from string quartets, and did not become an instrument in its own right until the early 1900s. This was due to a few soloists who showed composers the possibilities of the instrument. Much of this exposure was due to the teaching of Maurice Vieux (1884-1951), founder of the French School of Viola. This recording is dedicated to his memory. |
