Background: In January 1954 Maria Callas appeared once again in one of her most successful roles at Milan’s La Scala: that of Lucia in Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. But on the podium, that evening, there wasn’t just one the many reasonably competent conductors on which Italian theatres could then count: there was the great, the brilliant Herbert von Karajan. The result was one of the most memorable soirées in the history of La Scala, of which, fortunately, a radio recording has survived. This recording is now released by IDIS digitally restored and freed from its many flaws and noises. |
