Background: Arturo Toscanini conducted the première performances of four operas by Giacomo Puccini (Manon Lescaut, Bohème, Fanciulla del West and, after the composer’s death, Turandot), greatly contributing to the international success of his friend’s works. Surprisingly, Toscanini did not record many Puccini operas, and only La Bohème had the honour of a recording, in New York in February 1946. |
