Background: Alfonso Ferrabosco is often referred to as 'senior' or 'il padre', since his son of the same name was also to become a composer. From 1570 Ferrabosco embarked on an impressive corpus of sacred and secular vocal works which were to exercise great influence on English polyphony: more than seventy motets, several sets of Lamentations and an anthem to an English text have survived in manuscript. His setting of Psalm 103 (Benedic anima mea Domino) offers examples of Ferrabosco's ingenuity and his works served as models for the motets of Byrd and Tallis in their celebrated Cantiones sacrae of 1575. |
