Background: Poulenc's choral works constitute a high point in the choral art of the twentieth century. Sustained by an infallible feeling for the voice and for choral texture, Poulenc can make a choir 'sound' like no-one else. Most of the works on this CD are to poems by Paul Éluard. They include a clever juxtaposition of the inexorable cold in Un soir de neige, with the radiant celebration of a bright summer sun in Sept Chansons. Paul Éluard was the nom de plume of Eugène Grindel, French poet, active in the Dada and Surrealist movements. He was particularly inspired by Walt Whitman, gassed in 1918 and discovered by Jean Paulhan, who presented him to André Breton and Louis Aragon. His first wife Gala, left him for Salvador Dalí. His second, Nusch, (Maria Benz) a model for friends Man Ray and Pablo Picasso, was considered somewhat of a mascot of the Surrealists. |
