Background: Wolf left orchestrated versions of twenty four of his 300 or so lieder. The instrumentation ranges from small chamber ensemble - clarinet, horn and harp, woodwind quintet and sextet, Classical Mozart orchestra (with clarinets) for Anakreons Grab, to large symphony orchestra (in the setting of Goethe's Prometheus), and right up to full operatic forces, with chorus, for the bloodcurdling ballad Der Feuerreiter. Wolf's music depicts the tumult, the galloping rhythm and the strident signal of the fire bell, transformed at the end into a death knell. Listeners familiar with the original version for baritone and piano will be aware of the high drama which is explicit in the text and is here heightened by the use of larger forces. |
