Background: Scarlatti's last opera and musical testament, Griselda, premiered in Rome in 1721, received a single performance at the Teatro Capranica and has largely been neglected since. René Jacobs again surrounds himself with a world-class line-up of soloists accompanied by the impeccable musicianship of the Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin. The tragic story is of King Gualtiero, who makes his wife Griselda, a commoner, undergo cruel trials in order to demonstrate her steadfastness, but she triumphs and remains at his side - the classical happy ending being provided by the librettist Apostolo Zeno. |
