Background: The eighth book of madrigals has a special place in the secular output of Monteverdi. Printed in 1638 this late, isolated publication by the 71-year old composer, long past his peak, is a true testament, musical, aesthetic and indeed philosophical. The eighth book can be said to sum up Monteverdi's stylistic development. It brings together a number of works composed in different periods and places and true to the symmetrical principles evident in his greatest works (L'Orfeo and the Vespers of 1610) he divided his Book 8 into two parts: the warlike madrigals and the amorous madrigals. At the centre of each is a major work: the Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda amongst the Canti guerrieri and the Lamento della Ninfa at the heart of the Canti amorosi. Gramophone Award winner, René Jacobs has assembled a dream cast of distinguished soloists who submit to the demands of the finely-tuned ensemble work essential for madrigal performance with tremendous aplomb. His future plans for harmonia mundi include Scarlatti's, La Griselda with Dorothea Röschmann and Rinaldo with Vivica Genaux. |
