Background: Carl Heinrich Graun belongs to the generation of composers that represent the transitional phase between the late Baroque and Viennese classicism. Their main sphere of activity, too, Frederick the Great’s Court Orchestra in Berlin, was one of those centres in European musical history in which the stylistic fermentation of the mid-18th century, took place. He was one of the most renowned composers of his day, and during his lifetime he was regarded in the first place as a master of the Italian opera. But he owed his fame to his church music, particularly to the work on this recording, the Passion-cantata, Der Tod Jesu, composed in 1754/1755 to the words of Carl Wilhelm Ramler, which enjoyed an unprecedented fame. It became the most popular Passion of its time. |
