Background: Sisera was among the last oratorios composed for the Mendicanti, one of the Venetian foundations for orphans that gained European fame for their music making. It was a rich musical tradition that came to an end when the Venetian Republic surrendered to Napoleon, leaving music education in the north of Italy in chaos. It was Simon Mayr who would eventually become the leading light in the reform and establishment of new music ‘conservatori’, his own school in Bergamo producing many fine musicians, for example Donizetti. |
