Background: These unique recordings may well owe their existence to Joan Sutherland's appearance in the cast. Indeed it is likely that they are the earliest known of the great diva, who replaced an indisposed Joan Hammond. No other parts of the cycle are thought to have been recorded and the conclusion is that they were made to preserve the scenes in which Sutherland appeared. |
