Background: The publication of previously unknown recordings by any great musician is always an interesting event but in the case of Kathleen Ferrier it becomes a major occasion. The recordings included on this CD are from various original sources; the Serse and Elijah sides are unissued takes from Decca commercial sessions. Ferrier's Party scene is a private recording made in New York at the home of her American friend, the actor William Griffis. She is heard accompanying herself on the piano, the only recording to have preserved this other facet of her musical skills; and Ferrier is clearly out to have a wonderful time. Although only six minutes long, this scene offers a unique opportunity to hear Ferrier with her friends, off-duty and relaxed; her throaty chuckle and chummy banter convey something of her impish sense of humour. All the remaining tracks on this CD are taken from BBC broadcasts. |
