Background: The remarkable American virtuoso Albert Spalding when auditioning for the Bologna Academy, in his youth, was awarded the highest mark since Mozart had auditioned there in 1770. His international career included the American premières of both the Elgar and Barber concertos and this 1952 recording of the Brahms Concerto is a magical example of Spalding's qualities: breadth of style, sensitivity, masculine vigour, with a scrupulous eye kept on Brahms', and Joachim's, phrasing. The cadenza is the soloist's own, poetic at all times and there is a 'one-ness' of conception about this performance which merits a serious hearing. |
