Background: An absolutely groundbreaking new ensemble from Flanders, made up of a mixture of professional and non-professional singers, or, as the group's director, the ethno-musicologist Björn Schmelzer likes to put it, of 'professional non-singers', with the aim of truly reconstituting the atmosphere of past performances. Their approach to singing is legions away from the technically, academically impeccable, but too often sterile performances of other similar ensembles. The repertoire is 15th-century, but performed as it would be heard at Notre-Dame de Paris in the 18th century, with the ornamental and polyphonic treatment known as 'machicotage'. The programme is built around the Caput Mass (Mass of the Head) of Johannes Ockeghem and intelligently placed into the context of the Mandatum Ritual (Ritual of the Footwashing). |
