Background: Roberto Fonseca is one of the most extraordinary, charismatic young pianists, composers and band leaders to explode from Cuba in recent times. His eagerly awaited new album Akokan (which means heart in Yoruba), was recorded late 2008 in the Egrem Studios in Havana and features the musicians with whom he has worked for the last 12 years.

An explosive pianist, Fonseca's dazzling music combines Cuban traditions to the lyricism of Herbie Hancock, the drive of McCoy Tyner and an unparalleled gift for melody. Soulful and beguiling, his music transcends artificial definitions such as jazz or Latin but is a vibrant, wondrous contemporary reinvention of the venerable traditions of both musics.

The repertoire for Akokan is a selection of his own compositions, inspired by all the experiences and situations in his life, and is dedicated to those who have most influenced and shaped his life and musical career.
