Background: The three works featured on this recording from English composer Roger Steptoe show three sides of a single, fascinating musical personality. The Oboe Concerto was written for actor Sebastian Fernandez-Armesto and is cast in a single movement consisting of two clearly contrasted main sections. The strings often provide a luxuriant bed of sound over which the Oboe can sing. Each of the seven contrasting movements of the elegant Seven Miniatures, written for the Trio Magellan in 2007, has a well defined character, but all are thematically linked. The Sinfonietta was composed for the organist Oliver Latry and was first performed in July 2006. The work evolves around the theme of light, three of the movements carrying themed titles, Dance of the morning light / Sunset / Nocturne and finally, day break. |
