Producer and designer Hugo de Ana's opening imagery evokes a Rome of outsize sculpture and sets the opera against a visual expression of the overbearing collusion of political power and the Church. He creates a shifting sequence of telling images and colour schemes to create atmosphere and to complement the sensational singing.
