Background: All the tracks on this compact disc were recorded 'live' during the long Summer 1942 to Autumn 1943 gramophone recording ban and this is a rare opportunity to listen to Count Basie and his fabulous orchestra as they were during the year in which they did not record for their contracted record company. The inclusion of singer-comedienne Ida James is an added bonus as she had been working as a solo performer at The Trocadero in Los Angeles since leaving another fine band Erskine Hawkins and the two selections which feature here are her only known guest appearance with the great Count Basie Orchestra. |
