Background: The two operas on this recording sit pretty much at opposite ends of the baroque era, but both are connected through a dramatic / musical tradition that became part and parcel of the Jesuit enterprise throughout the seventeenth and into the eighteenth century. In recent years scholars have come to reflect on the 'Jesuit way of proceeding,' a rather amorphous notion that points not so much at what the Jesuits did in the period of early modern Catholicism, but rather how and why they did what they did during this period. |
