Background: Brussels in 1896 was the launch pad which projected Hector Dufranne (1870-1951), a modest tannery worker, into the first rank of the 20th century's performers. A native of Mons until 1939, he made the round of the best known stages in the world: the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Covent Garden, Monte-Carlo, Paris, Chicago, New York. He sang in the first performance such works as Fervaal (Vincent d'Indy), Le Chemineau (Xavier Leroux), El ratablo de Maese Pedro - Master Peter's Puppet Show (Manuel de Falla), Grisélidis and Thérèse (Massenet), and The Love of 3 Oranges (Sergeï Prokofiev). One should also not forget Debussy's operatic masterpiece, Pelléas and Mélisandre, in which he memorably performed the part of Golaud. |
